My sister just said to me that the Metro (A free paper here in Birmingham) stated that “gay men believe condoms are an optional extra.” and linked it into HIV/AIDS in the gay community. This sort of thing makes me livid. I am sick to death of people automatically linking aids with gay men. It has already been said that straight people are more likely to contract HIV/AIDS than a gay man, so why the assumptions? Just because I’m gay doesn’t mean I am a walking time bomb for the onslaught of HIV/AIDS and so I feel that as well as raising money and awareness this week, there is a massive need to change the over riding view that HIV/AIDS is only an issue in the gay community.
