New Facebook features on the way?

Posted by: Edd Mills on: July 31, 2007

Facebook is down at the moment, displaying the message “We’re upgrading”. I wonder whether this is just a server upgrade or there are some new features due? I’m hoping for some more options to do with disabling certain applications but we’ll soon see.

Facebook upgrading

Update: Facebook is back up now with no noticeable updates from what I can see. Someone in the comments says that there are rumours floating about that Facebook got hacked, so it’ll be interesting to see if Facebook say anything more about all the down time.

Update 2: According to Mashable, the down time was due to a bug that was allowing users to log into other people’s accounts and see, basically, pages they shouldn’t of been able to. However, they have denied all claims of being hacked saying that the down time was solely due to the aforementioned bug.

ugh. facebook IS upgrading. I googled it and all I found was this blog…it’s good to know I’m not the only bored person at work..

I’m more impressed that the post got indexed on Google so quickly! Nevertheless, hopefully the upgrades are beyond simple optimisation or similar.

Jesus, its been down all day! Everyone’s been really worried at work that we’re in trouble for using it!! Maybe the head office hasn’t found out we’ve been spending time on facebook during working hours afterall..

the latest theory is that it was hacked. seems pretty likely as there was no prior announcement. also at least one user reported glitches: random email addresses appearing automatically in the login box.

i think facebook has had a lot of changes very recently, and i think that they’d probably be taking a breather, rather than going straight into another giant change. also they usually aren’t out of service for very long, and they’ve been down for what, 5 hours now?

Being a developer myself, I think it’s quite evident that Facebook was hacked today. Had they been simply upgrading, from a software standpoint, this is done in an offline controlled environment where all tests can be performed prior to a full release. This is so you don’t suffer the downtime that FB saw today. From a hardware standpoint, they are adding servers to their farm on a constant basis – never a hiccup – because everything is load balanced. I’m quite positive that they were hacked.

I’ve also just noticed that all of their URL’s now have a new variable that was never there before:

“pwstdfy=”

I’m guessing that this is an acronym of some sort, the first two letters standing for password, but that’s just my thought.

And in addition, I see the Wikipedia entry has now been locked for editing after people started speculating further that FB had been hacked. Hmmmmmmmmmm.
